PD 3.1 Explained: What the New USB Power Delivery Standard Means for You
USB PD 3.1 raises the maximum charging power from 100W to 240W. Here is what PD 3.1 means for laptops, chargers, and the future of USB-C.
What is USB PD?
USB Power Delivery (PD) is the standard for delivering higher power over USB-C. It allows chargers and devices to negotiate the optimal voltage and current, enabling fast charging for phones, tablets, and laptops from a single standard.
What is new in PD 3.1?
PD 3.1, released in 2021, introduced the Extended Power Range (EPR), raising the maximum power from 100W to 240W. Key changes:
- Maximum power increased from 100W to 240W
- New 28V, 36V, and 48V voltage levels added
- New EPR cable standard for high-power delivery
- Backward compatible with PD 3.0 and earlier
EPR (Extended Power Range)
EPR enables charging the most power-hungry devices:
- **28V / 5A = 140W** — MacBook Pro 16″ fast charging
- **36V / 5A = 180W** — gaming laptops and workstations
- **48V / 5A = 240W** — maximum power for future devices
To use EPR, you need a PD 3.1 charger, a PD 3.1 EPR-rated cable (5A), and a PD 3.1-compatible device.
Do I need a PD 3.1 charger?
You need PD 3.1 if:
- You have a MacBook Pro 16″ and want the fastest charging
- You use a gaming laptop or mobile workstation
- You want to future-proof for upcoming high-power USB-C devices
For most users with phones, tablets, and 13–14″ laptops, PD 3.0 (up to 100W) is sufficient. PD 3.1 is the premium choice for power users and the latest laptops.
FAQ
Is PD 3.1 backward compatible with PD 3.0?
Yes. PD 3.1 chargers work with all PD 3.0 and earlier devices. They negotiate the appropriate power level and will not damage older devices.
Do I need a special cable for PD 3.1?
Yes. To achieve full EPR power (140W+), you need a PD 3.1 EPR-rated cable (5A). Standard 100W USB-C cables will limit output to 100W.
Which devices support PD 3.1?
Currently, MacBook Pro 16″ (2021+) supports PD 3.1 at 140W. More laptops and devices are adding PD 3.1 support. Check your device specifications.
