USB-C Fast Charging Guide: Protocols, Wattages, and Compatibility
USB-C fast charging involves multiple protocols — PD, PPS, QC. This guide explains what each means and how to ensure fast charging for your devices.
USB-C vs USB-A
USB-C is the modern standard for fast charging. Unlike USB-A, USB-C:
- Supports higher power delivery (up to 240W with PD 3.1)
- Is reversible (no wrong way to plug in)
- Supports data, video, and power over one cable
- Is the standard for all modern phones, tablets, and laptops
PD (Power Delivery)
USB PD is the universal fast-charging standard over USB-C:
- Negotiates optimal voltage and current between charger and device
- Supports 5V, 9V, 15V, 20V (and 28V/36V/48V with PD 3.1)
- Maximum 100W (PD 3.0) or 240W (PD 3.1 EPR)
- Used by Apple, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and most laptop brands
PPS (Programmable Power Supply)
PPS is an extension of PD 3.0 that enables dynamic voltage adjustment:
- Allows the device to request precise voltage in 20mV steps
- Reduces heat and improves charging efficiency
- Required for Samsung Super Fast Charging 2.0
- Look for PPS support if you have Samsung devices
Quick Charge
Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC) is an alternative fast-charging protocol:
- QC 4+ is compatible with USB PD
- Older QC versions (QC 2.0, 3.0) are being phased out
- Most modern chargers support both PD and QC 4+
Ensuring Fast Charging
To get fast charging, you need:
1. A charger that supports your device’s protocol (PD, PPS, QC)
2. A cable rated for the required power (5A for 100W+)
3. A device that supports fast charging
4. The correct wattage for your device
All Powgent GaN chargers support PD 3.0, PPS, and QC 4+ for universal compatibility.
FAQ
Why is my phone charging slowly?
Common causes: wrong charger (lacks PD/PPS), wrong cable (not rated for fast charging), or using the device while charging. Ensure your charger and cable support your phone’s fast-charging protocol.
Do I need PPS?
You need PPS if you have a Samsung Galaxy device and want Super Fast Charging 2.0. For iPhone and most other devices, standard PD is sufficient.
Does the cable matter for fast charging?
Yes. For power above 60W, you need a cable rated for 5A (100W+). Standard 3A cables limit charging to 60W. For PD 3.1 EPR (140W+), you need an EPR-rated cable.
